Learn More About Botox® & Xeomin®

What exactly are Botox® and Xeomin® injections?

These cosmetic injections harness the power of purified botulinum toxin to temporarily relax the muscles that cause wrinkles.

Botox® is the original, time-tested wrinkle relaxer. Its active ingredient blocks nerve signals, allowing the skin to flatten and smooth out, delivering visible results in 3-5 days that typically last 3-4 months.

Xeomin®, also known as the “naked injectable,” contains only the active neurotoxin – without unnecessary proteins – offering a purified, protein-free formula with results similar to Botox®, lasting approximately 2.5-4 months.

Botox® and Xeomin® are both neurotoxin treatments that temporarily relax muscles to smooth out wrinkles, but they have several notable differences:

Formulation

  • Botox® contains a complex that includes botulinum toxin type A along with additional proteins.
  • Xeomin® offers a purified version with only the active toxin, free of extraneous proteins.

Protein Content and Allergic Reactions

  • The extra proteins in Botox® might slightly increase the risk of allergic reactions.
  • Xeomin’s® protein-free formulation reduces this risk, making it a purer option.

Onset and Duration

Both treatments typically begin showing results within a few days. Xeomin® may have a slightly faster onset, but Botox® tends to maintain its effects for longer – with results lasting 2.5-4 months versus 3-4 months respectively.

Uses

While both injectables have many of the same uses, Xeomin® is specifically approved for treating glabellar lines (frown lines) and chronic migraine headaches, and Botox® is approved for a wider array of wrinkles and additional conditions.

Choosing Between Botox® and Xeomin®

The best choice for you depends on your individual needs and preferences. Your healthcare provider can help determine which neurotoxin is most suitable based on your medical history, potential allergy risks, and desired treatment outcomes.

The first thing you need to do is text or call to arrange a consultation with Angie Nguyen, our Aesthetics Certified Provider. Our consultations and treatments can be conducted onsite or in the comfort of your own home (across the Austin Metropolitan Area).

We recommend scheduling your Xeomin® or Botox® appointment at least two weeks before any special events. The procedure itself typically lasts 20-45 minutes.

Before your treatment, you will meet with a virtual nurse practitioner for a brief health exam. As the treatment begins, expect a mild pinch, and anticipate three to ten injections per treatment area, depending on the number of areas treated.

After treatment:

  • Allow up to two hours for the treatment to fully take effect.
  • Wait at least two weeks before undergoing any other cosmetic procedures.
  • Avoid heavy exercise and exposure to heat for at least three days.

We recommend doing a couple of things ahead of time:

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine one week before your visit.
  • Ensure it’s been at least two weeks since your last facial or peel.

Just one. Many clients begin noticing results within 3-7 days, with full effects visible within 1-2 weeks. Depending on which treatment you receive, these results typically last 2.5-4 months, though individual factors such as dosage and metabolism may vary.

The effects of Botox® and Xeomin® gradually diminish as muscle activity returns. Follow-up treatments every 3-4 months are recommended to maintain your results.

Botox® and Xeomin® are generally safe for healthy adults. However, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals and those with certain neuromuscular conditions should consult a healthcare provider before treatment.

Side effects are generally mild and temporary, including redness, swelling, bruising, or minor headaches that usually resolve within hours to a few days.

During treatment, most clients experience minimal discomfort – a slight pinch or stinging sensation is common. A topical numbing cream is available if needed.
